A Street-Renaming, A Street Festival and A Night on the Town

7 Jun

Sorry to have been so out-of-touch! I was in New York this weekend for a truly special event.

A street in Brooklyn was renamed after my godmother who passed away two years ago yesterday from cancer. As I’ve written about before, I decided to train for and run the Marine Corps Marathon in October for Team-in-Training to honor of my aunt. This weekend was a chance to honor her memory.

Between driving:

prepping for the ceremony:

This is what sandwiches for 300 looks like

and having some much needed fun:

Of course I was able to finish this...

and more driving, posting was a little difficult. So was running. I went to spin class on Friday and then took Saturday and Sunday off. Not only did I need it, but there  literally wasn’t enough time to think about running, let alone actually run.

The re-naming ceremony was held on Saturday and was incredible. My godmother was an outstanding woman who touched so many lives. The turn-out on Saturday was a testament to the impact she had on those around her.

I miss her everyday and feel incredibly lucky to have been her goddaughter.

Saturday night was spent living the high-life in Manhattan. I had a great time, got to hang out with my awesome uncle and soon-to-be-aunt and didn’t get to sleep until 3 AM. I cannot remember the last time I was up that late! I feel so old. 🙂

I swear I didn't sleep in these clothes...

Sunday was spent ingesting ridiculous amounts of German food. And German beer and wandering around a giant street festival in Brooklyn where we encountered the best and brightest America has to offer…

When street festivals go horribly wrong

The drive back to DC Sunday night was relatively painless for once. Usually there’s traffic along the turnpike (thank you New Jersey) and it takes ages to make the drive. Plus, paying tolls makes me angry. But we made great time and I got to bed at a reasonable hour.

Thank God, because I have to step my training back-up this week after taking sometime to recover from my two half-marathons. I’ve got to get back into a regular training groove, and once I do it will stay that way through October. I’m starting to feel a bit nervous about MCM. This weekend helped solidify the fact that I really will run MCM, that I really do have to spend the next four months training to run 26.2 miles.

Panic attack commencing in 3,2,1…

Whewwww…. such a big beer. That’s so wonderful how they honored your godmother.
